AP: New Mass. law OKs Sunday morning alcohol sales
The new law, which was part of the $27.6 billion budget Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick signed Wednesday, allows restaurants to start serving alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The previous law did not allow alcohol to be served until noon … The law takes effect immediately.
But if you’re an early riser who wants a 9 a.m. mimosa beside your omelet? The state of Massachusetts says no. This raises three questions: Why? Why? and Why?
Well, as commenter “taxaholic” writes on Boston.com:
Please, I need the state to prevent me from drinking on Sunday morning, and to prevent me from buying alcohol at a discount, and to prevent me from attending a happy hour. It’s very important to me because I can’t be trusted.
It may not be that the Commonwealth doesn’t trust its residents, but that it doesn’t want to relinquish control over liquor law and licenses.
