Germany’s chances of reaching the World Cup final took a hit this morning, when “octopus oracle” Paul picked Spain to win the semifinal between the two nations. To this point, Paul has correctly “predicted” Germany’s five World Cup matches, including an improbable loss to low-ranked Serbia. Paul is one lucky mollusk - the odds of randomly picking five matches are 1/64. But then again, maybe it isn’t random: Paul could be drawn to the colors of the German flag, or could enjoy basking in the cheers after picking Deutschland to win, or his trainers could be putting an inferior mussel in one of the tanks. Whatever the explanation, if there is one, we’ll probably never know, and that’s okay. And despite Paul’s pick, I’ll be rooting for Germany tomorrow. Kickoff tomorrow, 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
